have in no way announced, promoted, touted or advertised in any I will either try a different powder or I am moving on to another bullet.View QuoteStill pondering why Western Powders the manufacturer, and big vendors such as Mid-South, MidwayUSA, Natchez, etc., etc., etc. I have no intention of going around in circles with this bullet / powder combination any longer. In several other rifles I have performed this ladder test with, I usually don't have to tinker with seating depth or additional velocity nodes since groups have typically been 1 MOA or less upon the first range trip. I ran the same battery of tests for the first velocity node to confirm.no difference in groups on paper. This resulted in no decrease in group size. When those groups did not show promise, I shot groups of increasing jump from 0.010"-0.025", 0.050", 0.075" and 0.100". I started with the the second node (higher velocity) and shot for groups with a 0.010" jump (same jump the ladder test was conducted at). With a new bullet, I start with a Satterlee ladder test to identify potential velocity nodes. I posed the question from the standpoint of "in theory, would a powder change potentially make this much change?" I didn't elaborate on the details in bold because I didn't want it to distract from the hypothetical of what I was curious about.which was "could a powder change potentially shrink groups 2-3 MOA?" I suspected this may be a bad lot of bullets but I have another rifle that shoots bullets from this same lot extremely well. I tried a variety of powder charges and seating depths with this bullet, but the rifle will not shoot this bullet any better that 3 to 4 MOA. What ever the velocity and or acceleration rate the bullet should leave the muzzle when it is at rest, any changes, powder etc will affect this, it is not so much the different powder but more of when the bullet leaves the muzzle, this can be adjusted with powder charge. So, to say the accuracy 'node' is at X velocity is not always accurate as with different powders or same powder at different pressures will affect the burn rate therefore the acceleration rate of the bullet.

The powder and charge weight will determine the velocity at the muzzle and the acceleration rate to the muzzle. ( I do have a load for a 243 target rifle and case fill is 91%, its in the 0.3's out to at least 540 yards, an anomaly) The powder must be compatible with other components, ideally case fill should be 95+%, I either like less then 100% or over 100% to about 105% with stick powder, to be sure loads are randomly compressed or not. I find that if the bullet is dimensionally correct and balanced from one to another, the bullet is concentric to the bore, powder charges have a 0.02 gn variance, cases sorted and all other BR techniques and rifle mechanically sound, THEN it comes down to 'powder charge and type.

People forget that 95% plus of most game is shot under 200 yds. at my age, it'll last me most of my shooting career.Ĩ x 57, I move up to 4198 or RL 7 if I need more velocity and still maintain the accuracy. If you needed faster than those two powders would deliver, then the next best thing is 3031.Ībove a 22 caliber chambering, most of my most used powders are RL 15, 4064, IMR 4895, and 3031.regardless of cartridge.Ĩ x 57 and 444 Marlin, my powder of choice is SR 4759. If you can live with some lower velocity, by using SR 4759 or Blue Dot, you could keep your accuracy going for another 1000 rounds or more. If you're an old guy, and have a rifle barrel that is seriously loosing its accuracy.

One reason I am a BIG FAN of IMR medium burn rate powders ( 4198 to 4230) is they are pretty consistent and forgiving powers for accuracy.
